Proper Hand Positon and Where to Look
|
 |
The
first thing to consider when discussing proper technique is hand position. Most people are taught to position their hands at
10 and 2. While the practice of having two hands on the wheel is important, we suggest your hands should be at 9 and 3. This
placement allows better steering feel and balance. It also allows you to more easily make both emergency and regular
steering maneuvers more smoothly.

The
next thing you need to think about when driving is where you should look. The most important thing to remember about
where to look is that your car will go where you look. If you are focusing on what is directly in front of you your reaction
time to emergency situations is much shorter. This view makes things happening in front of the car seem faster, giving you
less reaction time. On the other hand, maintaining a view where you are trying
to go, will make things happening in front of you appear slower. This allows more reaction time for avoiding emergency situations.

"When discussing these techniques the bottom line is safety. If you
focus on driving using the correct methods you and your vehicle will be safer on the road or track" (M. Kellam, 2004).
